From Anger to Self-Control

Anger Self-Control

Anger can rise fast—especially when you feel disrespected, misunderstood, or overwhelmed. But Solomon’s wisdom teaches you a better way: pause, think, speak carefully, and choose a response that protects your peace and honors God. Self-control isn’t weakness—it’s strength.

God’s Wisdom for Self-Control

“A fool gives full vent to his spirit, but a wise man quietly holds it back.” — Proverbs 29:11

Today, I release explosive reactions and choose calm strength. God is teaching me self-control.

3 Simple Steps to Calm Anger

  • Step 1 — Pause before you speak.
Count to 10. Take one slow breath in and out. A pause breaks anger’s power.
  • Step 2 — Name what triggered you.
Ask: “What just happened?” (disrespect, pressure, fear, tiredness, feeling ignored). Naming it helps you respond wisely.
  • Step 3 — Choose a wise response.
Decide your next best action: speak gently, walk away, pray, or wait until you’re calm. Self-control is a decision before it’s a feeling.

Reflection Question

Reflect
What situation triggers your anger most often—and what do you usually say or do in that moment? What would a “wise response” look like next time?

One Small Step for This Week

Practice
Try one self-control habit for 7 days:
• Pause + breathe before replying
• Lower your voice (even if you feel loud inside)
• Walk away for 2 minutes to reset
• Write what you want to say, then rewrite it gently
• Pray: “Lord, rule my tongue and temper.”

Simple Prayer

Pray
Lord, when anger rises in me, help me pause. Teach me self-control, calm my heart, and guide my words. Help me respond with wisdom instead of reacting in the heat of the moment. Amen.
